Walukagga: I Composed Revolutionary Songs for Only Opposition
KAMPALA– Kadongo Kamu singer Mathias Walukagga has declared that his 25-year music career has been a consistent voice for Uganda’s opposition, insisting he has never lent his art or influence to ruling party politicians.
Speaking after being unveiled as the National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer for Busiro East, Walukagga said his revolutionary compositions have always been a tool for political resistance.
“For the last 25 years, I’ve been releasing, composing and airing out revolutionary songs only. I’ve never campaigned for any member of parliament belonging to NRM. I’ve been in the opposition all the time,” he told reporters.
The celebrated singer, who replaces Medard Lubega Sseggona as NUP’s candidate, said his loyalty to the opposition cause has never wavered — both in music and politics.
“I’m very sure the card must come to me. But if it doesn’t, I’m ready to stand behind the flag bearer. I will never betray the party or the cause,” he added.
Walukagga stressed that unlike some politicians who turn independent after losing party primaries, he would not break ranks.
“I assure the voters of Busiro East that I’m not going to contest as an independent like others have started doing. If I lose, I’ll stand behind the flag bearer for the betterment of our party,” he said.
Known for songs that address corruption, injustice, and exploitation of ordinary Ugandans, Walukagga’s transition to Parliament is seen as a natural extension of his cultural activism.
