AIGP Charles Kataratambi Dies

Kampala: Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Charles Kataratambi has died after a battle with diabetes.

He was admitted to Nakasero Hospital where he passed on, police confirmed Thursday.

Kataratambi, a lawyer by profession, joined the force as a cadet in 2001 and rose through the ranks to head sensitive units, including the Police Flying Squad and later the Special Investigations Division (SID). His career was, however, jolted in 2015 when he was arrested over gaps in high-profile probes such as the Kyetume–Katosi road scam.

He was asked to hand over his office and remained sidelined for nearly a decade.

In 2025, President Museveni redeployed him to the top leadership of the force, appointing him Director of Human Rights and Legal Services.

From that seat, he urged officers to integrate respect for human rights into all policing, giving a notable lecture to senior police and prisons officers at Bwebajja last year.

Known as a calm but firm officer, Kataratambi’s return was seen as a second chance at high command after years in the cold.

His death, colleagues say, robs the force of an experienced officer who combined operational command with a grounding in law.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
