Scores Injured in Road Crash as NUP’s Kyagulanyi Campaign Convoy Heads to Jinja

At least seven people were injured in a road crash involving vehicles and motorcycles escorting National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu on Saturday morning.

The accident occurred at around 11:30 a.m. in Namyoya Village, along the Nakifuma–Kayunga road, as Kyagulanyi’s convoy traveled from Kalagi toward Kayunga.

According to police, the crash began when an unidentified motorcycle collided with another vehicle at high speed, triggering a chain reaction in which several motorcycles collided. A white Mitsubishi Rosa minibus (UAZ 064H), which was decorated with Kyagulanyi’s campaign posters, rammed into the fallen motorcycles, leaving multiple supporters injured. The victims, identified as Kewanza Bashir (27), Kakaire Bashir (35), Ssepereza Musa (40), Kisomba Micheal (28), Ssewaya Eric (23), and Mutagubya Robert (24), were rushed to St. Francis Naggalama Hospital for treatment. Other motorcycles involved in the accident include UFQ 569H, UGH 892B, UEK 351T, and UFQ 250Q, all red Bajaj Boxers. Three motorcycles and one vehicle were later towed to Naggalama Police Yard for inspection.

SSP Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, attributed the cause of the accident to reckless riding and driving, urging all road users to exercise caution.

“Police continue to investigate the incident, but preliminary findings point to reckless behavior on the road. We appeal to motorists and cyclists, especially during campaign activities, to prioritize road safety,” Onyango said.

The accident comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2026 general elections, with Kyagulanyi traversing different regions to consolidate his support.
