Kyagulanyi, Nandala Mafabi, and Muntu Join Uganda’s 2026 Presidential Race

KAMPALA – National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, was on Wednesday nominated as the sixth candidate in Uganda’s 2026 presidential election, after fulfilling the legal requirements under the Presidential Elections Act, Cap 179.
Kyagulanyi, who first contested against long-time President Yoweri Museveni in 2021, became the third aspirant to be nominated on Day 2 of the ongoing exercise at the Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala. His nomination was confirmed by Justice Simon Byabakama, the Returning Officer for Presidential Nominations.
Earlier in the day, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) strongman Nandala Mafabi James Nathan was the first candidate to be nominated. Mafabi, a veteran legislator from eastern Uganda, is positioning himself as a reformist voice within the opposition.
Also nominated was Gen. (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), who emphasized the need for a just political order. “We have the discipline and the ability to provide capable leadership… Peace is not the absence of war; it is the presence of justice. We need a system where everyone, including the President, bows to the law,” Muntu told reporters after his nomination.
