‘Mama D’ to Challenge Ssemujju Nganda for Kira Municipality MP Seat in 2026

Bashebah Dorcus Kirabo, widely known as Mama D, has officially declared her candidacy for the Kira Municipality parliamentary seat in Uganda’s 2026 general elections.
Mama D, who gained international fame after setting a Guinness World Record for the longest solo cooking marathon, will be contesting as an independent candidate against long-time FDC stalwart, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda.
In her official statement, Mama D outlined her vision for Kira, emphasizing empowerment, economic growth, and social development:
“Dear People of Kira Municipality, I am honored to announce that I will be standing for Member of Parliament in Kira Municipality as an independent candidate,” said Mama D in a statement on Sunday.
“My journey has always been about service, impact, and empowering our community. Now, I am stepping forward to champion a brighter future for Kira—one where we feed hope and shape the future together.”
Mama D first captured national and global attention on December 23, 2023, when she embarked on a grueling cooking marathon at Zoe’s Cakes ‘n’ Bites in Kira, Wakiso District.
Her goal was to break the previous record of 119 hours and 57 minutes set by Irish chef Alan Fisher.
Through sheer perseverance and culinary expertise, she successfully achieved this milestone, earning a place in the Guinness World Records.
Her remarkable feat was widely celebrated, not just as a testament to her endurance but also as a symbol of her dedication, hard work, and ability to inspire a community.
Now, she is channeling that same determination into politics, aiming to bring transformation to Kira Municipality.
Mama D’s Campaign Message
Under the banner of ‘A Stronger Kira – Feeding Hope, Shaping the Future,’ Mama D asked fans to be part of her movement.
“Your support—whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading the message—will be the foundation upon which we build a better Kira,” she observed.
“Every contribution counts, and together, we can create lasting change. If you believe in this cause, join us today. Let’s walk this journey hand in hand, for a Kira that thrives, uplifts, and stands strong.”
The Race Against Ssemujju Nganda
Mama D’s entry into the race has set the stage for one of the most closely watched contests in the 2026 general elections.
Ssemujju Nganda, a seasoned opposition politician and former spokesperson of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), has represented Kira Municipality since 2011.
Known for his strong parliamentary presence and vocal criticism of the government, he has maintained a solid political base in the constituency.
However, Mama D’s growing popularity—fueled by her recent international recognition, grassroots appeal, and community engagement—positions her as a formidable challenger.
Unlike traditional politicians, she is entering the race as a fresh voice, focusing on unity, economic empowerment, and social progress.
