Police: 2 NUP MPs, 23 Others in Our Custody

The Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) has confirmed arresting 25 supporters of the NUP. These include two MPs: Derrick Nyeko (Makindye East) and Muwada Nkunyoinyi (Kyadondo East). The police say that the incident happened on March 3, 2025, at about 1:40 PM in Makerere Kavule, Wandegeya, Kampala District.
KMP Deputy Spokesman Luke Owoyesigyire says that “a group of individuals, including supporters and leaders of the National Unity Platform (NUP), allegedly engaged in acts of obstruction, malicious damage, and common nuisance.”
The group, Owoyesigyire said, “some dressed in red overalls and NUP-branded attire, blocked the road, disrupted traffic, and reportedly threw stones at road users.”
Despite repeated warnings from security personnel, he adds, “They continued their activities, prompting police and other security agencies to intervene.”
“As a result, 25 individuals, including Members of Parliament Hon. Nyeko Derrick and Hon. Nkunyingi, were arrested and are currently detained at Wandegeya Police Division. Several motor vehicles involved in the incident were also impounded, and exhibits, including NUP-branded clothing and other items, were recovered. Investigations are ongoing at Wandegeya Police Station. Statements have been recorded, exhibits documented, and the case file is being prepared for submission to the Resident State Attorney for legal guidance,” Owoyesigyire said in a statement on Tuesday.
Owoyesigyire urged all members of the public to maintain peace and use lawful means of expression.
“Additionally, we have noted reports circulating on social media alleging that some of the arrested individuals have died. We would like to categorically state that no deaths have been registered. However, if anyone has been a victim of alleged brutality, as claimed on social media, we encourage them to come forward and report to the relevant authorities so that the matter can be thoroughly investigated. For now, the suspects remain in custody and will be arraigned before the courts of law on the aforementioned allegations,” said Owoyesigyire.
